Trying to choose a wide angle lens for NEX-3?
I’ve narrowed it down quite a bit, and have come up with two possible lenses under my maximum budget (<0). One is the Voigtlander Heliar 15mm f/4.5. I know what you’re thinking if you know your lenses, why am I not going for the 12mm? Because it’s 1.1 stops slower and twice as much for a nearly negligible gain in wideness.
There is also next to no light fall-off, since it was meant as a full frame lens. The Voigtlander will not have autofocus or EXIF data. However, this lens is TINY. It perfectly complements the NEX’s diminutive stature. The Voigtlander is as low as 0.
The second choice is the NEX-native Sony E-mount 16mm f/2.8 w/ VCL-ECU1 12mm adapter. This is even wider and nearly twice as fast. It’s also slightly cheaper but slightly larger, and retains full autofocus and EXIF data.
The build quality of both lenses is high-end, but the Sony suffers from one flaw. The optics are absolutely NO match for the Voigtlander. Nothing is. My question essentially boils down to does perfect optics, or AF and wide aperture, matter more in wide-angle photography?
