choosing a wide angle DSLR lens for D90 Nikon?

September 1st, 2010

Im fairly new to DSLR photography and have a Nikon D90 w/ the "stock" lens 18-105mm and I would like to purchase a wide angle lens for more dramatic photos and capturing more areas. I have a budget so Im looking into Tamron and Sigma but since im new its confusing trying to decide, is there a website that can teach me more about lenses?? I am looking at the Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 and Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8. Is there another lense I should consider? advice from knowledgeable photographers would be great!!!

Well, the 17-50 is no wider than your 18-105, really. It’s less than one stop faster, too. I wouldn’t add that at this point if all you are looking for is a wider wide-angle lens.

The Sigma 10-20 is quite a difference from the lens you already own, so between these two, it is the better choice.

Popular Photography also liked the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 (fixed aperture), which is from one to two stops faster than the Sigma that you mentioned. I think I’d look into this one: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/554036-REG/Tokina_ATX116PRODXN_11_16mm_f_2_8_AT_X_116.html The user reviews are very good.

well, its great having an endless supply of money… these lenses arent cheap.. but, ill bet you havent considered the distortion you get with a super wide lens… its hideous… and pretty useless in the real world.

save your money… im an olympus user, and have a 14 to 45, and a 17 to 55 wide lens, they distort at the edges as well… but i know this, and shoot accordingly…

with your saved money got get a copy of gigapano2… it was originally designed to create walkthru’s for hotels and the like… but, it stitches frames together, without the distortion, i can shoot 30 or 50 frames… and create seamless super wide imagery…shooting in 11mp RAW… thats a BIG print… ive got a 22 inch monitor… its full at 16% of full size… at 100% its 20 times wider than the screen… pin sharp, and you can just keep zooming in… you can show things the human eye cannot see.. like the view around corners… its almost surreal…

if you need to see more, then i suggest you take a step backwards…

Visit your local camera store and try the Nikkor 10-24 mm and Nikkor 12-24 mm lenses. You will know in a moment which you like the best.
