Sharpest aperture for a Canon EF-S 18-55mm lens?

September 2nd, 2010

I want to know the sharpest aperture for the Canon EF-S 18-55mm lens. I would test it myself but the conditions outside here are so horrible and we are under hurricane watch -.-. I want to know the aperture where there is the most detail and it is sharp, preferably for shooting landscapes or portraits.

      it will be around f11

generally one stops a lens down 2-3 stops to get the "sweet spot"

      I would say F8 @ 18mm and F11 @ 55mm

more open than F8 and aberration diminishes picture quality
less open than F8 and diffraction diminishes picture quality

unless you have the camera on a tripod and you use remote shutter release though its a moot point

and usually for portraits absolute sharpness is not as important, especially women’s faces they might even get mad if its too sharp
