is wide angle photography all that its cracked up to be?

    December 30th, 2011

I took a few shots with someone else“s lens and indeed, you see more of the scene, but the optical distortion is overwhelming. (its a good make of lens).
ok ok! :) I am trying to decide whether or not to splash out on a new lens and am thinking about how many people are going to laugh when they hear how much I have spent.
Perhaps "overwhelming" is too stong a word. I just felt that it make a narrow space seem very wide. It was not a fisheye lens
The focul length was 10mm if I remember correctly.
I certainly take the point about it being necessary for landscape and architecture. I was wondering whether the leses enable creativity in other areas. I am thinking for instance, that a wide angle of a person with a low depth of field could have a certain impact. Sure, when people are spread out, I can see its useful.

Good lens for portrait photography for my Canon Rebel XSI?

            August 23rd, 2011

Okay so I’m investing in a new lens. I’m still fairly new to photography, but the kit lens is really not that great and telephoto is of course not appropriate for portraiture. I’m hoping to get something somewhat versatile, that I can use in more than one situation that’s NOT people, but I do prefer portraits.

So what specs should I look for, and what are the best lenses for this sort of thing? I heard a wide angle would be a good bet. I also want a lens that can provide me with good bokeh, and a large f-stop. But it still has to be affordable.

I’m looking to spend around 0. But if it’s over my price range, that’s okay, all suggestions are welcome! Please explain why this lens would be optimal, it’s sort of a big investment for a student to make.

I need something that would be good in low lighting, for sure, also.

            Thank you in advance.

Best (nikkor) lens for nighttime photography?

              July 30th, 2011

I own a Nikon D80 and I want a lens to use at night or in low light places. (A lens under 0 and wide angle preferably, if possible)
              Any suggestions?
I will be taking take pictures of people in low-light conditions and city sights at night when traveling.
I currently have an 18-55mm lens. Is it true that with my current lens if i zoom in to 50mm, the view would be the same as the 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 lens? Same for the 20mm f/2.8 or 12-24 f4 lens?

Because I read somewhere that the D80 doesn’t have a "full frame". So the views would be different.

I didn’t plan on using a tripod, but if I have to I will.

Sorting out 'Verticals' in my wide angle pictures?

                July 14th, 2011

I’m a photography student and I love wide angle architecture. After talking to an established professional he told me to ‘Straighten out my verticals’ in my images. Since I use a 10-20mm lens for most of my work I realise that there can be some distortion around the edges caused by such a wide angle of view.

How can I correct the distortion of straight lines in my pictures?

                Thanks :)

What is a good lens that's good for taking close up pics but has a wide angle to take big large groups?

                  June 23rd, 2011

I just got into photography and still learning. Recently I started working in clubs taking club photos an the lens that I have kinda makes it hard to do so. I find myself having to step back farther just to get good shot. Im looking for a lens that can do real close quarters shooting and has the ability to take a shot big enough for a wedding. I’m leaning towards a 10/20 or a22/80… My camera is a canon7d

What is a good beginning photojournalist lens?

                    June 2nd, 2011

I might be for too much at the moment, but I’m looking for a good, cheap (0 or less) lens for my Canon Rebel XT to start out as a freelance journalist.

I’ve done photography casually before and am still learning a lot about how everything works, so I’m not particularly well-versed in actually using the terminology. However, these are my main complaints:
                    - My lens never seems to be able to pick up much light. I’ve been trying to find f/2.8 lenses, but they all seem very expensive.
                    - A lot of "photojournalist" lenses seem to measure 18-50 mm, yet when I took photos at a publication before, my constant problem was that I couldn’t get close enough. Should I switch to a zoom lens then? In which case, should I get a wide-angle and a zoom lens? The problem is that getting both with f/2.8 would make it expensive, so should I only get one of that quality or both?

                    Thank you for the help.
